“What? You mean you aren’t secretly the mastermind behind the 80 ish years of prolonged warfare throughout a large area of New Mexico?” She deadpanned then cracked a gentle smile, “I don’t blame you don’t worry. It honestly makes it kinda fun and challenging. I have to keep sharp- I got too soft getting used to the boys.”
“That’s a good suggestion, and I brought it up once but uh, the gopher hiring process is pretty extensive and grueling compared to bribing ex mobsters as grunts or something for temp work. The three and a half of us manage.”
“Oh geez you sweetheart- I would take you up on that except it opens some security risks and contract issues. Thanks for offering.”
At his last bit she frowned in surprise for a moment before grimacing, “Hoo oh boy I hope my hunch is wrong but probably not.
“Well, when you say it like that, ehehe, that did sound kinda stupid, didn’t it?” he said. A dusting of pink settled on his cheeks and he rubbed at the back of his neck.
“I guess I end up trying to like, I dunno, I guess I just feel bad when someone’s having a hard time and I know there’s not much I can do about it,” he added, as he sipped at his own coffee.
“I guess that’s a good point. It probably won’t hurt to bring it up again, just in case there is anyone who’s in desperate need,” he said, thoughtfully drumming his fingers against the coffee cup, “Well, if you feel you need more people, it might not hurt to recruit more, even if means bugging the bosses a few times.”
“I guess that’s fair,” he replied, before he then looked at her curiously, “Your hunch? You think something might happen?”
He glanced over his shoulder, as though wondering if someone might have been behind him.
“You think he might be here?”
“Oh no nonono it’s not stupid! I appreciated it, like, you’re really sweet I just always y’know, gotta joke and stuff it’s in my blood. Sarcasm. It’s how Jersians cope with being in Jersey.”
She glanced over his shoulder as well before she processed what he was asking. The grimace deepened and she looked down sheepishly at her coffee while scratching her jaw.
“Uh, no. Kinda the opposite. Like a “already happened” sorta thing. Mmm… sometimes I forget that casually laughing about certain things doesn’t go over great with some uh…more vengeful friends of mine. I miggghhta mentioned getting shot to the wrong person. If I’m right you probably won’t be seeing that particular spy again. But hopefully I’m wrong. Cuz that could spell trouble for you and said friend- less you more him don’t worry I’m just concerned about coldfront reds getting mad at your team. But! I’m not usually right so!”
She took a sip of her drink.
