This is a Shojo/Shonen role-play with my friend based around a group Japanese highschool students who, under the pushing of first year Ami Mori, form a very unique school club. Their club goal? Defend the weak and give them the tools to defend themselves: both physically and psychologically. If you experience a bullying problem or suffer from the area’s thugs and yankees: give them a buzz or tip off, and they will help you for free. When they aren’t too busy practice sparring, that is.

Note: Japan schools start a new year in the spring

—————————————

It was the first day of a new year. it was pouring. April did not spare the soggy masses of students as they squelched through the halls to find their homerooms. It was a happy day for some though: those who had been separated from their friends since break started. GIrls squealed and hugged each other while the guys stood around grunting amicably. Those who had been driven by chauffers were evident in the fact that their hair and clothes were dry, and, since few students drove/owned their own cars, these were easy to spot.

Kaede Akiyama leaned against the wall in the main hall, surveying the other newbies. There were a great many middleschools in the city, so many first years, especially merit and scholarship students, were starting out completely alone. Kaede was one of the latter, along with her friend Jikki who, as per usual, was late.

Kaede sighed and looked around. Maybe it would be a good idea to get to know some other kids this year. After middleschool’s obnoxious social dickery, she was looking forward to a blank slate.

There was never such a thing called a blank slate.

Well, at least for him.

Ignoring the group of big kids cracking their knuckles and snickering at him, he stared up at the long lists of homerooms, obnoxiously bright red hair still dripping with water and with his bag slung over his shoulder. It was really too bad he was short, like 5’0”, especially since he basically was legally blind without his glasses. It also didn’t help that his last name usually would land him in the upper parts of the list.

Ah. He blinked, scrutinizing one of the names on the list. Classroom 1-C. Makoto Fujioka.

Well that wasn’t hard at all. He glanced at all the names also listed under Classroom 1-C and recognized none of them. That was to be expected though since all of his few friends were attending a public high school, while he decided to take a scholarship to this…preppy one instead. Wincing at the thought that one of those bullies might be in his homeroom (oh god, that’d be horrible, especially since the homerooms would be staying the same all three years), he turned away to slip into his classroom. He took out his favorite book on astronomy, only to bump into someone at the corner.

“Ah! Um…sorry!” He half-shouted, once he looked up, wondering if he had crashed into a wall. Taking millisecond observations, he couldn’t help but pick out the bright pink hair the student had and the eye patch covering her left eye.

She must be one of the upperclassmen, he realized, panic welling up again. What if she got pissed? “Uh…sorry again S-Senpai! I-I wasn’t- I- I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

Kaede took a half step back in surprise and raised an eyebrow.

“Hey, hey it’s okay. Chill, bro," Her eyes momentarily landed on the book in his hand, but she looked back at his flustered face with a half grin without commenting on it, "You must be new, huh?” she held out a hand expectantly “Akiyama, Kaede, class 1-C. Your turn.”

“O-Oh me?” He took the hand, maybe a bit too eagerly. He was relieved to see at least one  "Fujioka, Makoto. Nice to meet you, Akiyama-san.“

He blinked, realizing Kaede was, like him, a freshman in class 1-C. “Oh! You’re a freshman like me. Well…” He blushed again, this time more good-naturedly and rubbed the back of his wet hair. “Well that’s kind of embarrassing. You were standing apart from everyone, so I kind of assumed…”

"Nice to meet you too,” she grinned at his eager shake then cocked her head at his remark, “Hmm? Oh yeah, I know absolutely nobody-well that’s not  exactly true now- so I just figured I’d wait here until my bud gets here. Her dad’s probably driving her or something. I didn’t even realize you said senpai, to be honest.”

Absentmindedly, she patted his shoulder then looked down the hall again for a moment before turning back to Makoto.

"Hey, class doesn’t start for a good fifteen minutes, Would you like to go exploring, Fuji-san? Oh, crud sorry, is it okay if I call you that?” It was her turn to be embarrassed, and she twirled a strand of still damp hair around her finger.

“That’s fine, Akiyama-san.” Makoto replied, smiling at his new nickname. He’d never been called Fuji-san. Usually, it was either ‘Mako-kun’ or ‘Mako-chan’ or even ‘pipsqueak’ or ‘runt’. He blamed his height for the last two. “I’ve just never been called that before.”

Still, he blinked when she suggested exploring in the fifteen minutes they still had. “Eh? But didn’t you say you were waiting for your friend? I mean, it’s your choice, of course, but I was just planning on reading my book. Still, I’m fine with whatever either way and-“

He choked on the air and coughed, gasping for breath. “…Sorry,” He blushed, rubbing the back of his head. “I got a little bit of hand there…”

She nodded, “Yeah, but she will be fine alone for a few minutes. Besides, getting a feel for the school now means less scurrying around later, right? If you wanna read, go ahead. I’m just going to check out what upstairs looks like. What’s your book about, anyway?”

Kaede had managed to coax him out of the classroom during that conversation, and she looked over her shoulder while heading for the stairs. It was an almost Harry Potter-esque set-up: an open double staircase led from the main hall (which  the hallway to 1-C was just off of) up to some of the special classrooms. This wing of the building held all four first year homerooms on the ground level with special science classes up past the stairs. Coincidentally, class 2-A and 2-D had their home rooms up there as well.

The pink haired freshman could feel the pressure of many stares pressing themselves up against her. She shrugged them off like pesky puppies and fought to suppress a smile. This would be a change. Not much of one, though.

She wondered briefly how many of them would go home claiming that a Yankee had infiltrated their academy. The eyepatch tended to give that impression.

He may be called spatzy, but he wasn’t stupid. He frowned as he noticed the stares that Akiyama-san had been getting from the people around them, some of them being potentially their classmates. Was it because of the pink hair? Or the eye patch? Sure it looked strange, but best to judge people by their personality, right?

They waded through the sea of people anyways when they reached the wing with the science rooms. He lit up at the sight of the lab tables and glassware littered across the counter tops near the back. Science was good. Science was always good. His middle school was always good about science, except for the fact that-

“Oh my god.” He exclaimed quietly when he saw that in one of the science classrooms. Forgetting that homeroom would be starting soon, he rushed into the classroom up to the telescope it had by the window. His old school never had one but since this place did, maybe he wouldn’t have to lug his own to school everyday.

She knew what a telescope was, sure, but she wasn’t quite certain what it was doing by the Physics room window. Of course, it was obvious that the teacher enjoyed astrology from the hundreds of glow in the dark stars painstakingly tacky glued to cover the entire ceiling. Kaede had only noticed them by accident when she had looked up to check the clock (which had convoluted equations to equal the hour)

“Hey, Fuji San,” she tapped his shoulder and pointed skyward, “Do those look like real constellations to you? I think I see the big dipper, at least.”

“They should be,” a deep male voice responded from behind them, “I see you like my baby, Mr…” He cut off, not knowing Makoto’s name and instead drank deeply from his mug then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and placed it on the desk, “She’s an Orion Space Probe 3, the best I could by on a teacher’s salary. Oh, are you two freshme- first years by any chance?”

He hadn’t noticed the dark stars glued to the ceiling, until she had pointed them out to him. With wide eyes, he nodded and added. “Yeah…” He pointed to a cluster of stars near what resembled the Big Dipper. “Little Dipper’s over there. You probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference if the shades weren’t up and if we didn’t know we were in a building.”

Jumping out of surprise, he spun around to see the teacher with his coffee mug. “Y-Yeah! Sorry, I was just surprised to see one here- the school didn’t offer any astronomy classes so…” Yeah. Makoto rubbed the head of his head, letting the sentence finish itself. “I’ve got an Orion Observer 70mm at home; it took me a year to save up for it.”

“Yes sir,” Makoto responded eagerly. “Um, Fujioka, Makoto of Class 1-C and uh, this is…” He gestured at Akiyama-san so she could introduce herself.

“Akiyama, Kaede. Also class 1-C. Why do you ask, sensei?”

He beamed at them and clapped his hands together, “Nice! I guess I won’t have to teach you how to work this one, then? You’d be surprised how complicated some people make stargazing. And you’re both 1-C’s too!  That’s mighty convenient. My name is Mr. Chapman but you can call me Dave- oh wait. Never mind that would get us all in trouble: I guess Chapman-Sensei’s fine. What was I saying again?”

“You asked if we were-”

“Right, right sorry. I’m the newly assigned homeroom teacher for 1-C, that’s why I was interested. Speaking of which,” he looked down at his watch, “We should get to that class before I set a bad example with tardiness.”

He waved them to follow him out of the room as the five minute warning bell rang. Kaede dropped back so that Makoto could catch up and they followed him to the top of the stairs. Barely anyone was in the main hall at this point, and the upperclassmen had all dispersed to their homerooms, so the stairs were empty save the three of them. It was when Kaede and Makoto were on the third step from the top that it happened.

A crash sounded from around the corner behind them, and as Kaede turned to look, she saw a girl with long, dark hair and bright blue eyes run down the steps, bump into Makoto, and shove something (it looked like a leather bound notebook) into his hands before leaping down the steps: taking them two at a time.

Not a second after she hit the bottom landing, a messy haired blond boy skidded drom around the corner to the balcony at the top of the steps. He spotted the fleeing girl and yelled a foreign obscenity. in a single, sweeping, movement, he launched himself over the banister by using his hands as a fulcrum with which to swing the rest of his body over. He landed with less of a thud than was expected, and took off without barely any pause. In three running strides, he had caught up to the girl, and he tackled her to the ground.

Kaede cried out in shock and looked around for Mr. Chapman, but he had disappeared into his homeroom.

• Will make Reese Celestine Vyse an available muse. Role playing in his original verse will be hard, considering a few people kinda sorta died, but AUs will be fun. ♥

• Outside of Aya in Cast 1, I have no girl characters. As much as I adore guys, I’d like to write at least ONE more girl.

• I’d…

Yeah, happy story lines are actually way harder than tense or dramatic ones. For every OC of mine with a happy childhood there are three that are at least partially screwed up.
