“Yeah” she leaned into the sidehug, still frowning, “Still sucked and sucks in effects. But” she gestured to the furby, “You at least can say that you’re a thousand levels above them in terms of skill and success- I think.”

Dell grinned at her “that’s for sure” he said nodding. He wasn’t normally one to toot his own horn, but now seemed a like an appropriate time “came in top of my class, have 11 hard science PhDs. Working at a job I love. I’ve got a good life.”

He held the furby in his hands and looked down at it “I can’t wait to see the look on his face.”

“11 PhDs is way more threatening than anything else I have ever heard about anyone. Most people break trying to do one. Make it through 11? You, sir, are the baddest most intimidating person alive. Or dead probably. Skeletons are pretty underwhelming.”

She blew a kiss to the furby, beaming like a maniac, “Oh you’ll have to tell me all about it. Because if anything can throw him off it’s gonna be this. Good luck Dell, I have to check in at base but I’ll be seeing you soon.”

“Still,” she leaned against him, “I DO have a contact who can curse their dreams.” She grimaced at his assurance, “Thanks… but that would be kinda tricky, and nothing so bad’s really happened to me. Just kids being mean y’know. I appreciate it though.”

He let out a small laugh and pulled her into a side hug as they walked “and mines just adults being mean. i appreciate it a lot, I do. It’s behind me now, for the most part. I’m still going to run into people like that, but I think now I’m more able to handle it than I was back then. You know?”

“Yeah” she leaned into the sidehug, still frowning, “Still sucked and sucks in effects. But” she gestured to the furby, “You at least can say that you’re a thousand levels above them in terms of skill and success- I think.”

“I can make their wives leave them. I have my ways. I can replace all the sugar in their homes with salt, unscrew chairs just a little, get nails in their tires. I have resources Dell I can make them suffer karma one way or another.” She seemed oddly serious about this, her fists clenched and eyes narrowed, “missing tax returns, lemonjuice in their milk saw one leg of a table shorter than the others, I have resources to drive them insane and I know people.”

He placed his hand on her shoulder “I appreciated it, Messenger, I really do” he said calmly “but it’s not worth it was over a decade ago now. I think if karma’s going to get them, it’s more satisfying to let it happen on it’s own.” He spoke softly “but I can’t stop you from doing anything if you want to.”

The truth was, he wanted to see something happen to them, some sort of precaution, but he also knew chances were that wasn’t going to happen. It made him hesitant to tell anyone, and even more so to tell the Spy.

He appreciated his friend, and her willingness to destroy them. He smiled at her “you’re a great friend” he said softly “I’d do the same for you.”

“Still,” she leaned against him, “I DO have a contact who can curse their dreams.” She grimaced at his assurance, “Thanks… but that would be kinda tricky, and nothing so bad’s really happened to me. Just kids being mean y’know. I appreciate it though.”

“Do I need to track this man down and put a hit on him?” Was her immediate response, “because I can and will. I’ll take out anyone who was involved in it not going well. Nonlethally find ways to make their lives Hell you just say the word”

He let out a small chuckle, almost forced. As much as he wanted to get back at them, he couldn’t. “Thanks, but it’s in the past” he said shrugging softly “him and his asshole friends probably have families by now anyways. I know that might not stop them from reacting that way… again, but I can hope they’ve matured since then.”

“Dell. Sweetheart. Darling. It’s like, the worst love story. I mean I love Shalespeare but uh, like seven people die including the main couple. Which I think avoiding is a good idea on? Don do that.”

She sucked her lips in to keep from talking.

“Mm…puns great…mmm that’s fair. Yeah that’s a better idea. Probably, I wouldn’t listen to my advice much anyway because I am the worst with this. Good luck though. Best of luck.”

“That’s a lot better of a comparison” he agreed “dying isn’t ideal. I won’t die if I don’t have to, I’ll promise you that now.” He fidgeted with the Furby as he spoke “at least not any time soon.”

He chuckled a bit “you’re probably better than me” he told her “haven’t really had much, or well, any experience. I dated a girl in highschool, but I was trying to hide it from everyone, and part of me thinks myself too.” He spoke softly.

“I told one guy I liked him in college, and, that didn’t end well. So since then I’ve just kept it all to myself.” He looked at his friend and smiled softly “you’re one of the vary few people who know.”

“Do I need to track this man down and put a hit on him?” Was her immediate response, “because I can and will. I’ll take out anyone who was involved in it not going well. Nonlethally find ways to make their lives Hell you just say the word”

“Oh I mean according to romance novels and stuff that’s like the quintessential start to a romance. Do I believe it in real life? No, but wow that is hoo.”

She put her hands back to her mouth trying not to say things. Trying to slow down and figure out how to phrase it.

“Dell… if you want to know… if a man like that… is into men…maybe bring up and diss the appearance of some random celebrity man like oh I don’t know…” she paused, “Someone like uhh Frank Sinatra or Charlie Chaplin? Just a random person y’know? And listen to how he reacts?”

“I mean, I could just jump in Romeo and Juliet style” he joked “in fair Badlands where we lat our scene.” He let out a soft chuckle “isn’t that supposed to be the best love story of all? Except they are like what.. fifteen?”

He shook his head “I can’t dis Sinatra, that’s a major sin. No pun intended.” Dell sighed slightly “I can just keep dropping hints, horribly flirting, and hoping he catches on.”

The reality was she never would have known anything if he had lied because she’s prone to being oblivious and believing people on this front. She’s eternally out of the loop.

But now she’s just been let in on the hottest gossip in the badlands, and hooo. That is.

She inhaled with her hands over her mouth before lowering them.

“I won’t tell anyone alive dead animal mineral or vegetable but Dell… that bastard? Hwhy?? Whow?? I’m not judging I’m just in shock? Him? Him? That particular one man in particular? What did he do, give you a rose and take you to the opera?”

He exhaled slowly and let out a shook his head a bit “its a bit of a story” he told her “and believe me, it’s as unexpected and confusing for me as it is for you. Spend how long of my life in a rivalry with the guy, and now…” His voice trailed off slightly. In his mind, Spy was likely to be interested in the more fancy type people, and well fancy he was anything but.

“I’m just waiting to see how it goes right now. Hell I don’t even know if the guy likes men, let alone men like me.” He shrugged a bit and tucked the now killer furby under his arm.

“Oh I mean according to romance novels and stuff that’s like the quintessential start to a romance. Do I believe it in real life? No, but wow that is hoo.”

She went quiet and made a muppety face. You know, like when their mouths squish? Messenger had to literally bite her tongue to avoid saying something dumb and out of contract or laughing too much. She took a moment, breathed, and settled herself slightly.

“Ohoho, well… this’ll be… really fun… and interesting. What ah, what did you do to earn a Spy’s particular targeting? If I maayyyy aaassk?”

He paused and stared intently at the furby. He could feel the blood rushing to his cheeks when she asked. Of course she would. Damn that. He could have easily told her a lie, but something told him even if he tried, she’d know something.

“It’s a bit” he started. God how was he going to put this. He knew she knew that he’s gay. But his words still got caught in his throat. “You know, just some friendly competition. Talked a big game with him the other day.”

He picked up the furby and turned to face her “and I think I have a crush on him. You can’t tell anyone I told you that. Anyone.”

The reality was she never would have known anything if he had lied because she’s prone to being oblivious and believing people on this front. She’s eternally out of the loop.

“Oh you have a guinea pig already? Do I know who?” Her eyes were bright with curiosity as she watched, “Rest in pieces them.”

She stood back and observed the creation.

“I should be able to patch fur up with some fabric scraps” she murmured, patting the critter too, “He looks great though. This is going to drive someone crazy and I’m excited.”

He let out a laugh “yeah, the other teams spy” Dell told her “he’s gonna be ramping up his attempts to get under my skin, so I figure a little more competition is only fair.” He spoke as if it was all a game to him, just to annoy the spy and make his job harder. After all that’s what happened to him, may as well give the guy a taste of his own medicine.

“Driving him crazy is the plan, after all. It’s going to be fun.”

She went quiet and made a muppety face. You know, like when their mouths squish? Messenger had to literally bite her tongue to avoid saying something dumb and out of contract or laughing too much. She took a moment, breathed, and settled herself slightly.

“You genius that’s perfect. Nobody’ll see it coming,” she grinned “And ow hope he doesn’t turn on us because that’ll sting. It also means possibly reusing casings or shrapnel bits which is always nice for conserving ammo.”

“That’s exactly what I was thinking” he told her, nodding slightly. Dell continued to work as he spoke “we’ll have to test it when it’s finished. I’ve got an idea of who I want to test it on. Got sort of a” he paused for a moment. What was it? He wondered how to word it “a rivalry, I guess.”

A smile spread across his face as he worked on it some more. Adjusting the furby slightly as it did. It was clear as he was finishing that the fur wasn’t going to fit anymore. “Well it doesn’t look cute, but I think he’s done.” Dell patted the furby on the head softly as he spoke, taking pride in his work.
