She had managed to make him laugh somehow. Messenger couldn’t help but grin awkwardly with the tiniest bit of pride at making it this far. Not dead and he broke character for a second? Wow, high five to you, you not dead mailman.

As soon as René leaned to check the TV, Messenger stiffened. It wasn’t a fear response, however. She simply stood up straight, arms at her sides, and stared ahead, barely blinking. She was unfazed by his flipping the switch, and simply listened at attention to her employer as the static cleared.

“Oh good, I see the TV at least got to you in one piece. Messenger, status?” She drawled, looking almost bored.

“Alive, ma’am.”

“Congratulations. If you’d gotten yourself killed this would be all the more irritating. Well, I suppose you’re wondering what the job is.” She took a drag on her cigarette, letting the smoke cast a bit of an eerie filter over the video, “I have an associate in Chicago that you are going to pay a visit. He goes by the name Benny Goodwick and runs a bar and game-room called Prissy Lips-

Messenger made an ‘ugh’ face at the name.

which is where you will find him. We have a trade to make, and I am sending you with the intelligence to keep it secure, and to make sure Goodwick keeps his end of the deal. This is an escort mission. Eliminate or neutralize any threats to the intelligence, both on the way out and the way back. Do you have any questions?”

An irritated sigh escaped René’s lips as he reached for the cigarette case in his jacket pocket. It sounded for all intents and purposes like a fairly simple mission: get in, sign a deal, and get out. But knowing the types of people the Administrator kept contact with, he had an inkling that this mission would be anything but simple. Nothing was ever quite so straightforward with Helen. Besides, just judging from the type of establishment the associate went by and the name of said establishment, René was already internally bracing for the overwhelming smells of cheap alcohol and bad musical taste. His eyebrows furrowed more and more as the Administrator spoke, clearly rather unhappy with the mission. He did not like the way this sounded: the simplest of briefings were often for the most complicated missions.

Fishing a cigarette out from the case, he flicked open his lighter and lit it, taking a deep drag before speaking.

“I assume I will be working alone,” he replied, “But is there anyone else I need to keep track of? In addition…” The Spy thought for a moment. “Transportation will be provided, yes? I hope I’m not expected to walk all the way to Chicago… It’s rather far from New Mexico, after all.” There were plenty of things that the Administrator wasn’t telling him. Plenty of extremely important things. “I also expect to receive a briefing of the man in question as well as his associates. There’s also the question of resources: what kind of equipment will be provided, and how much? I do not want to go into this blindly.”

“That was meant as a cursory ‘any questions.’”

Messenger shot René an apologetic look, even though she knew he was probably already very aware of Helen being… like that.

“Predictably, everything you just asked will be covered at the team briefing. Which starts now. To cover your first round of questioning, Messenger?”

“…Yes ma’am?” She had a bad feeling about this.

“You will be carrying the intelligence for this assignment. It’s sealed in the packet I gave you earlier.”

Messenger’s face drained of color and she looked down at the TV.

“To Chicago?”

“Don’t ask stupid questions, yes Chicago. Goodwick refuses to play nice with my grunts, so you are the only viable option. Will this be a problem?”

“I, uh, no ma’am.”

She shoved her hands into her pockets.

“Fantastic,” she re-focused on René, “As for transportation, the Pit has finished outfitting a vehicle for your use. Since you will be driving, Messenger will brief you verbally on Goodwick and his entourage. Give him the grey folder.”

Messenger nodded rapidly and fished out a grey Manila envelope stamped with “confidential” and held it out for the spy.

“Your IDs, fakes, and information on your cover identity and appearance-mask included- can be found in that file. Most of the gear in the vehicle is defensive: bullet proofing, poison, etcetera. You have also been wired a front payment of $2000 to purchase anything more you think could be helpful blah blah your additional incentives are listed in your ID packet. Any further questions?” She asked, clearly ignoring messenger’s hand poking into the corner of the screen.

“That’s the good thing about spawn, huh? You get a million chances to fall over again and again.”

She grinned and sprawled back on the floor, “Okay yeah it’s all your fault. You’ll be hearing from my lawyers. Good luck getting through to them- they’re birds”

“It really is a blessing” Dell said “nothing can stop us as long as its up and running.” He laughed softly “I’ll just give them some bird feed, should get them on my side fairly easily” he joked, gently nudging. He stretched slightly, grunting as he did.”

“Yeah, I’m happy I don’t have to worry about any of you.I still do but at least it’s mostly just because I’m that kind of mess. Hoo yeah.” She nudged him back, halfheartedly trying to pull him back down from where she lay.

“You would use bribery? Shame on you.”

She  thought for a moment.

“It would work perfectly, yes. They are loyal, but not that loyal.”

“Yeah friends can be interesting. In good ways… and uh intense ones.”

She watched his face, frowning. Poor lil guy. At least he had empathy or compassion left, but at the same time she knew how much it sucked to be in this job and retain them. Not that the alternative was better, but she still felt bad. A plan started forming in her head, but she ignored it as he took the out to change topics.

“Oh nice! Is she a close friend, or are you just keeping in contact? Either way, I love seeing people actually write to people. I can get the letter to her pidge express once you finish, if you’d like?

“I guess so, ehehe… as I said, I really do hope you’re wrong… he may have been salty but I don’t think he deserved to die, if he has,” he only said, fidgeting. He still seemed rather uncomfortable about the whole idea.

At least they had a chance to try and talk about something else, even if he knew it was a distraction tactic.

“She’s like another mother to me,” Russell said then, “And I finally got brave enough to send some letters to her again. Something happened back home and I was worried she wouldn’t want to hear from me. I was stupid to think that.”

He looked down at the letter.

“That sounds good to me, thank you. I’m gonna tell her about this guys I know. Jewish, like she is. Well, at least Jewish heritage. I think she would like to hear about that. She and her husband are the only Jewish people she knows now.”

“It doesn’t sound stupid at all. It sounds like a big change happened and you got scared about what that meant for you. Natural shit. Trust me, I know how hard it is to reach out to loved ones after stuff goes down, way harder than talking to strangers. You’re making strides to change that, an it’s something to be proud of bud.”

She listened with interest.

“Oh yeah that’ll be nice for her to hear about! Does she like flowers? If I stop by personally I could give her some from you-I know my mom always liked when we’d do that.”

“It wouldn’t be because of you! Look, I…” she awkwardly hover handed over his tapping fingers wanting to comfort him some way but clueless, “I made a choice, okay? A dumb one, but one I would do again. And then I made a REALLY dumb choice that I would not repeat. But I did it, and now it falls on me okay? I’ll talk to my… friend and clear this up. If anything, they can at least find where that red spy is and set everything back. I’m usually wrong, I’m sure your-ish guy is fine!”

Yeah she was at least 80% sure he was dead. Someone was going to get a talking to.

“But uh, I see you’re writing! Writing is cool! What uh, if it’s okay to ask, whatcha writing?”

Master of redirection. Super subtle.

“I, I, ehehe, have a friend myself. He has a similar attitude to your friend, which is why I try not to tell him about any incidents like that…” Russell said. He still drummed his fingers along the top of the table, “… Hopefully, there can be a chance that he might be able to come back from whatever happened…”

He brought his mug to his lips and downed about half the coffee in a few gulps flat before placing it down again. He seemed only a little bit calmer when he was done.

“I… I guess it is just a mistake, and at least you leaned from it, ehehe…” he decided that he had to try not to make her feel worse. She most likely felt bad enough about it, “I suppose it can’t be helped…”

He still didn’t like it, but could he do? Maybe he could try and make up for it somehow.

Does she think I’m stupid? Ah, Fuck it… it’s better than lingering on this…

“Yes. I’m writing,” he said, as he glanced back down at the notebook, “It’s fine. I’m writing a letter to my neighbour. well, she was my neighbour back in Boston. I figured she would appreciate it.”

“Yeah friends can be interesting. In good ways… and uh intense ones.”

“Oh no nonono it’s not stupid! I appreciated it, like, you’re really sweet I just always y’know, gotta joke and stuff it’s in my blood. Sarcasm. It’s how Jersians cope with being in Jersey.”

She glanced over his shoulder as well before she processed what he was asking. The grimace deepened and she looked down sheepishly at her coffee while scratching her jaw.

“Uh, no. Kinda the opposite. Like a “already happened” sorta thing. Mmm… sometimes I forget that casually laughing about certain things doesn’t go over great with some uh…more vengeful friends of mine. I miggghhta mentioned getting shot to the wrong person. If I’m right you probably won’t be seeing that particular spy again. But hopefully I’m wrong. Cuz that could spell trouble for you and said friend- less you more him don’t worry I’m just concerned about coldfront reds getting mad at your team. But! I’m not usually right so!”

She took a sip of her drink.

“Ehehe, I suppose so. I guess I really meant to say that if I had my way, I would try and make things easier for everyone,” he said, before he smiled, “Oh, I just see it as just trying to be a decent person, like everyone should. But I understand that. I’ve used morbid humour to cope with life on the field.”

It didn’t seem like anyone was lurking behind him. He didn’t have that prickling sensation that he got whenever he felt that a cloaked Spy was in the vicinity. He then looked back at her, raising a brow as she seemed unsure of what to say.

He felt a chill on the back of his neck. He fidgeted uncomfortably, looking away “and then looking back again.

“I… I really hope he’s not dead… ehehe…” Russell only said then. His heart pounded inside of his chest and his mouth felt dry, “I, I, ehehe, I can’t say I like the idea of someone being permanently, de-dead, especially because of, of me, ehehe….”

He anxiously drummed his fingers along the table top. It wasn’t something he could change if it happened, but the guilt still remained.

“I… I honestly, ehehe, do hope you’re wrong.”

“It wouldn’t be because of you! Look, I…” she awkwardly hover handed over his tapping fingers wanting to comfort him some way but clueless, “I made a choice, okay? For a moment she was happy being snugged then he tried to do the roll. As she twirled behind him, Messenger tripped on her own foot, stumbling into his and going crashing to the ground with a thump.

“oof”

In a not so graceful movement, Dell saw his friend stumble and tried to grab her before she hit the ground. He was unable to, but his movements couldn’t be stopped. One moment he was reaching down for her, the next, he tripped across her landing with a thump as well.

He was silent for a moment before sitting up. Soon, he burst into laughter “are you okay” he asked through the chuckles.

“I’m fine just dead.” She rolled over, rubbing her hip and squinting, “Ow oof fuck I need to practice falling again. I was getting better! But looks like I’m rusty. What about you? Are your old bones okay?” She grinned and sat up, nudging him with her elbow.

“I really am sorry I dragged you down though.”

Sometimes things change without being any different. Barbara Jared had passed by the Reliable Excavation Demolition base dozens of times, occasionally having to stealth in along with The Courier to drop off supplies. But she’d never taken the front entrance. She’d never stood awkwardly, all her gear and necessary belongings in a duffel bag strapped to her back while being introduced and officially added to the mercenary roster and respawn list. Thank God for Pauling. At least for a few minutes she had a friendly face setting shit up before she was left to be a supreme disappointment to a bunch of other murderers. Cooing from the covered cage in her hands distracts Barbara for a moment and she leans toward it in a soft sort of whispered babytalk.

“Yeah, it’s a new place beeb. I bet it smells funky, huh? You’ll be out soon I promise.”

Reluctantly, he let himself be pulled up as the music played from the radio. He let out a soft chuckle and looked at the other “alright alright” he said “I’m coming.” He didn’t know how to dance that well. Sure he knew the line dance, and square dance  but that was about it. Hence why he normally avoided situations like this.

Lucky for him she also doesn’t really know how to dance in any formal way and mainly swings his arms while she does a very clumsy attempt at a charleston and nearly falls into his shoulder. She sticks to kinda just stepping and shimmying to the beat while holding his hands.

“What? You mean you aren’t secretly  the mastermind behind the 80 ish years of prolonged warfare throughout a large area of New Mexico?” She deadpanned then cracked a gentle smile, “I don’t blame you don’t worry. It honestly makes it kinda fun and challenging. I have to keep sharp- I got too soft getting used to the boys.”

“That’s a good suggestion, and I brought it up once but uh, the gopher hiring process is pretty extensive and grueling compared to bribing ex mobsters as grunts or something for temp work. The three and a half of us manage.”

“Oh geez you sweetheart- I would take you up on that except it opens some security risks and contract issues. Thanks for offering.”

At his last bit she frowned in surprise for a moment before grimacing, “Hoo oh boy I hope my hunch is wrong but probably not.

“Well, when you say it like that, ehehe, that did sound kinda stupid, didn’t it?” he said. A dusting of pink settled on his cheeks and he rubbed at the back of his neck.

“I guess I end up trying to like, I dunno, I guess I just feel bad when someone’s having a hard time and I know there’s not much I can do about it,” he added, as he sipped at his own coffee.

“I guess that’s a good point. It probably won’t hurt to bring it up again, just in case there is anyone who’s in desperate need,” he said, thoughtfully drumming his fingers against the coffee cup, “Well, if you feel you need more people, it might not hurt to recruit more, even if means bugging the bosses a few times.”

“I guess that’s fair,” he replied, before he then looked at her curiously, “Your hunch? You think something might happen?”

He glanced over his shoulder, as though wondering if someone might have been behind him.

“You think he might be here?”

“Oh no nonono it’s not stupid! I appreciated it, like, you’re really sweet I just always y’know, gotta joke and stuff it’s in my blood. Sarcasm. It’s how Jersians cope with being in Jersey.”

“It is a little bit of a funny thing, aint it.” He chuckled. “Don’t see that too often in nature. I s’pose just like how you don’t see vehicles inside of another vehicle too often.”

“You don’t have to act like I’m gonna jump out and eat ya.” He chuckled. “I’m not some tightly wound old codger that’s gonna bite ya for no good reason.” He went around and opened the driver side door, climbing into the seat and putting the key in the ignition. Waving her on inside as he closed the driver side door.

“Nah, not a lot. I think it’s Lamoras or gamoras or something that’s the little fish that ride sharks for protection.”

“And uh, I will try not to. Do that. I uh, just, habit. Caution. I’ve been lightly stabbed for sitting in a guy’s preferred seat so,” she shrugs

At his wave she pulled open the door and climbed up into the seat, only to realize she opened the door too far and could no longer reach it.

“Every time,” She grumbled and held on to the door frame as she stood on the edge of the cab’s floor, hanging ten, to reach out to the door handle. She pulled and threw herself back into her seat, nearly catching her feet as the door slammed. She winced.

“Sorry.”
